From designing buildings to brochures and now handbags, designer Sherry Brown continues to put something unexpected in the bag.

The Baton Rouge artist launched urban:kitty handbags in 2005 and says her new Roadtrip tote includes a custom-designed dandelion graphic screen printed by a Louisiana-based company, Storyville. “I am very proud of this design because it showcases all of the things I am passionate about right now – graphic design, local sourcing, handbags, and, for some reason, dandelions.”

The Product. Functional and convertible, Brown meshes textures and patterns with sturdy hardware and metallic accents for a look that’s as unique as her home state. She describes her design aesthetic as feminine with an urban edge and often throws in a bit of vintage-chic. Brown exclusively uses upholstery grade fabric and leather to ensure the bags will withstand multiple seasons of use.

FinalThe Artist. Sherry Brown earned a degree in architecture from Louisiana State University and set about designing urban structures. Her love of art pulled her away from designing buildings to designing logos. As a graphic artist, her recent project is the design of marketing materials for a new resort on the banks of the Amazon in Peru, offering holistic therapies in a luxurious tropical setting.

Sherry’s unique handbag designs are the result of a broad range of experiences. Each bag is designed and sampled by Sherry prior to manufacturing. “It makes my day when I hear the bags are getting complimented by strangers and envious girlfriends. What fashionable woman wouldn’t want to be complimented on her fabulous taste?”

Sherry Brown creates from her studio in downtown Baton Rouge. Tigger, her urban kitty, served as a constant companion overseeing her work from her loft window for years. Tigger passed away earlier this year. Sherry’s products can be viewed at her web site:
