About the designer
Sherry Brown earned a degree in architecture from LSU and immediately began designing urban structures. While successful, she found the graphic design aspect of her work more appealing than building skyscrapers. That combination has served her well, with a unique ability to view shapes in 3-D. Brown says it was her childhood enjoyment of sewing, and her love of fabrics, that led to her first handbags using architectural software—drawing them dimensionally and envisioning how they would look in copper and blue fabric.
“I’m a graphic designer by day, seamstress by night,” Sherry Brown confesses, “but that appears to be changing.” She started by stitching a couple of unique bags—a small convertible Clutch and her travelCITY tote—sufficient for her own weekend travels. From there, friends became interested, but her break came when a gift to a fabric company representative resulted in an immediate order for 60 bags. While Brown has hired local seamstresses to produce her handbags she says she still “handles all design, makes samples and adds finishing touches.” Brown says her product is functional, convertible and not like anything you’ve seen before—clutches, totes and slouchy shoulder bags that get noticed due to their unexpected combination of colors and materials, including leather and chain. “I don’t do basic black, there’s enough of that.”
Sherry Brown creates from her urban loft in downtown Baton Rouge where she lives with her architect husband, Rick and kitty, Tigger. |
